Perpetuo Socorro church

Near the bastion we find PERPETUO SOCORRO CHURCH.

This is a small neoclassical temple dedicated to “Nuestra Señora del Socorro” (Our Lady of Succour) designed by the architect Pedro Lizardi in 1767. The body of the sole nave is totally rectangular with smooth linear walls. There is a choir stall, groin vault ceiling and arches which are supported on corbels adjoining the wall, and three small apses in the main chapel. The exterior is even simpler, defined by lateral pilasters and a small cornice on the upper section. It is finished in fine masonry. The bell wall was erected in the second half of the 19th century. Inside there are two highly venerated statues: the Christ of the Sailors and the Virgin of Succour.
